Over the past week John McCain's campaign has shown an increased willingness to go after Barack Obama in increasingly harsh and personal terms, the latest evidence of which is a new ad that attacks the Illinois Senator's celebrity status.
The ad -- regardless of what the McCain campaign says -- is designed to create controversy, an intent made clear in the opening seconds of the commercial when Hollywood types like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton are shown.
Steve Schmidt, who manages McCain's day-to-day campaign operations, seemed happy to stoke that controversy during a conference call on the ad today. "Do the American people want to elect the world's biggest celebrity or do they want to elect an American hero?" Schmidt asked, according to post.com's Ed O'Keefe.
