A reader pointed out this letter from Jean Martin to the Boston Globe:
... It is true that the right wing of the Republican Party, led by Newt Gingrich and others, used President Clinton's adultery as a weapon in an attempt to increase their own power. But it was Bill Clinton who recklessly handed them that weapon, and almost wrecked his own presidency as a result.
Vast amounts of money and energy that might have been used to better this nation and the world were wasted in the process. Clinton scraped by to finish his term, but so weakened his party and strengthened his opponents that he cannot escape a heavy share of responsibility for the subsequent years of Republican control of the White House and Congress.
If Senator Hillary Clinton did not know what her husband was doing (as her autobiography indicates), then I question her ability to read people and circumstances dispassionately and directly. If she even suspected what he was doing, and thought it unimportant, I question her judgment - all the more given the power and behavior of the Republican leaders on Capitol Hill. If she knew what he was doing and was unable to stop him, I question her ability to prevent the former president from derailing her administration, should she be elected, as he did his own.
These are reasons that the Lewinsky matter, and the need for Senator Clinton to address it, are important to at least one white middle-aged female Democrat.
